Trump Floats U.S. Joining British Commonwealth, Citing Love for King Charles

On March 21, 2025, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social suggesting the United States could become an associate member of the British Commonwealth. The statement followed his sharing of an article from British tabloid The Sun, which claimed King Charles III was preparing a “secret offer” to extend to the White House during a forthcoming state visit. Trump responded to the report with, “I Love King Charles. Sounds good to me!” Newsweek sought clarification from the Commonwealth via email on Friday afternoon but had not received a reply by the time of publication at 11:47 AM EDT, with an update posted at 1:06 PM EDT.

The Commonwealth, largely composed of former British colonies and dependencies, emerged from the mid-20th-century dissolution of the British Empire. The Daily Mail reported that King Charles aims to propose U.S. membership—making it the 57th nation in the group—amid strained U.S.-European Union relations over Ukraine’s conflict with Russia. This move is framed as a reinforcement of the U.S.-U.K. “special relationship,” a bond rooted in frequent foreign policy collaboration despite America’s break from British rule in the 18th century. While symbolic and not affecting national governance, joining could potentially mitigate Trump’s promised steel and aluminum tariffs, as per The Daily Mail.

Trump’s affinity for the British royal family dates back to his first term (2017-2021), when he visited Buckingham Palace and the idea of Commonwealth membership was initially raised. Recently, British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer delivered a letter from King Charles inviting Trump for a second U.K. visit, during which Trump called the king “a beautiful man.” On Commonwealth Day, March 10, 2025, King Charles emphasized the organization’s role in uniting diverse nations through support and friendship, a message underscoring its enduring relevance.

The proposal remains speculative, with no confirmation of U.S. entry. Canada’s existing membership in the Commonwealth could make a U.S. affiliation strategically appealing amid current cross-border tensions, though details of what associate membership entails are undefined.
