A 32-year-old man from Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, named Rajababu Kumar, was hospitalized following an attempt to perform surgery on himself using techniques learned from YouTube tutorials. On Wednesday, March 19, 2025, Kumar locked himself in a room in his village of Sunrakh and made a seven-inch incision on the lower right side of his abdomen. He had been enduring persistent stomach pain, which he believed was linked to appendicitis—a condition for which he had surgery at age 14. Operating a banquet hall, Kumar had recently experienced recurring discomfort in the same area, prompting his drastic action.
According to reports, Kumar purchased a surgical blade, needle, stitch cord, and an anesthetic injection from a local market, relying on online videos and internet research for guidance. After administering the numbing agent, he cut into his abdomen, but the blade went deeper than intended, intensifying the pain and causing severe bleeding. He attempted to close the wound with 11 sutures, but the bleeding persisted. When the pain became unbearable, he emerged from the room and alerted his family. His nephew, Rahul Kumar, rushed him to the Vrindavan District Hospital.
Dr. Shashi Ranjan, a senior surgeon at the hospital, confirmed that Kumar had made the incision and applied 11 stitches himself. After providing initial treatment and proper sutures, medical staff transferred him to SN Medical College in Agra for advanced care due to his critical condition. Ashwini Kumar, the Station House Officer at Jait police station, noted that the hospital notified authorities about the incident, though no further legal updates were provided.
Rahul Kumar told the Times of India that his uncle had been frustrated by ongoing pain despite previous medical intervention years ago. A family member recounted, “He brought various surgical items on his own. Then he cut open his stomach himself and stitched it back up. Afterwards, he came outside and said he was in pain. He must have given himself an injection, probably an anaesthetic. When the pain became unbearable, he came out and told us.” Kumar remained in critical condition as of the latest update on March 21, 2025, at 12:29 PM IST, as reported by ABP Live News.
